The Greater Dayton area has a vast abundance of rivers and streams, and although they are functional from a recreational aspect, they have serious issues that need to be dealt with. This section of the PANDSCORP website brings to light some of these issues and offers a variety of possible solutions as well. { Be sure to check out the Greater Dayton Fishing Association website}
Let’s address some of these issues here, and then take a look at some possible solutions on other pages.
- The local waterways are burdened with a serious litter problem. Floating litter gathers in pools and can be found scattered along the bank, while submerged litter and man-made debris(tires/grocery carts/ pieces of scrap metal) can be seen in many places resting on the bottom where water clarity permits.
- Surface runoff is another major issue, primarily in the form of sediment(soil erosion), and excessive nutrients(eutrophication). Both of these problems diminish water clarity, which favors undesireable species of fish such as carp, over more desireable native gamefish species such as crappie and smallmouth bass.
- The Great Miami River is the main waterway flowing through Dayton. Unfortunately, it has been neutered in order to make it easy to maintain (mowing and growth controls), and this has left it with very little structure to provide necessary habitat to sustain optimum populations and diversity of fish and other wildlife.
Below you will find various articles that offer possible solutions for all of these problems. If you would like to join the fight to clean up and improve our waterways, please fill out the form on our contact page.
